Not all lands are served by the District’s permanent distribution system. In some areas, growers have installed their own distribution systems to deliver water from the San Luis Canal to their fields. Pumps are mounted on the canal lining to lift water out of the canal and then the water is boosted to field elevation through pumping plants that sit off the bank of the Canal.
Electric power for these pumps is provided from Central Valley Project hydro generation, because CVP water comes with a power entitlement enough to deliver water to the elevation of the field. All water delivered through these facilities is metered and billed in the same way it would have been if delivered through a permanent distribution system.
